Massachusetts Innovation Works is the brainchild of Dr. Jeff Goldstein, a board certified Radiation Oncologist. Dr. Goldstein was Medical Director of Lowell General Hospital's Radiation Oncology Department for 21 years, and in 2012 he was offered a unique opportunity to serve as Residency Director for Radiation Oncology at Sheba Medical Center, the largest medical center in Israel.
While working at Sheba, he witnessed the medical benefits of cannabinoid compounds first-hand, since they have been legal in Israel for over 15 years. Moreover, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an arm of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, believes that cannabinoids - compounds that stimulate the body's receptor system - could alleviate dozens of illnesses, including schizophrenia, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, Graft-versus-host disease, multiple sclerosis, and cancer, among others.
With legalization spreading in the US, and the body of evidence supporting the medical benefits of cannabis growing, Dr. Goldstein firmly believes that the time is right to establish a world-class cannabis research and development center here in Massachusetts, a state with a pedigree of bio-medical and high-tech innovation. The new hub will be a proving ground for state-of-the-art agricultural techniques for the manufacture of pharma-grade products, cannabinoid and endocannabinoid medical research and development, regulatory research and development, as well as a cannabis R&D Incubator and investment arm.
